Howard Clark Naginata -- 22-3/4" Nagasa -- Fully polished in Shirasaya

$6,600.00 USD. On Consignment

This is an unusual piece. It is forged by Howard Clark out of his 1086 steel. The heat treatment is impecable, creating a hamon running down the edge an dup the back again. It is quite different as you can tell from the photographs. It is based on classic naginata dimensions and includes the typical naginata hi (the grooving).

It is a large blade at over 22" of cutting edge. The nakago itself runs over 22" as well. The blade is mounted in a custom alder shirasaya. The blade has a solid sterling silver habaki with a thick 24k gold plating.

The signature is also very unusual for Howard Clark testifying to the special nature of this blade.

Basically the mei says "O-Mimi (Howard Clark's "art" name) made this blade one lucky day in August".

A blade of this style is itself is very difficult to forge let alone the engraving of the various grooves. Polishing a very hard blade like this with the hamon running back along the shinogi-ji is also a difficult proposition, also not to mention the hi.
