27.5" Gendaito by Shimoosa Akitsugu
In good polish in shirasaya.
This is a wonderful sword by the WWII smith Shimoosa Akitsugu. It is unusual in that it is a rather robust sword with an exceptional length of 27.5" given when it was forged (1944).
Mei (Omote):
Shimoosa (no) kuni Akitsugu
Mei (Ura):
Showa 19 nen 8 gatsu kisshoujitsu [1944 August Lucky day]
Hamon:
Gunome-midare; Nie-deki
Hada:
Itame with mixed masame.
Extended chu-kissaki
Nagasa:
69.8cm (27.5")
Sori:
1.6cm
Moto-haba: 3.35cm
The blade is extremely healthy with an unusually well defined foundation and finish polish. This was a very well done sword given the time it was made. It would make for an exception sword for the martial artist as well as the student of the nihonto.
The extended chu-kissaki works well with the overall shape and feel of the sword.
The hamon is a very well done controlled gunome in nie. The hada is itame with masame running throughout.
Increasingly the collecting world is seeing the work of some of the WWII smiths in a much better light. For too long these smiths have been all "grouped together" as "wartime smiths". However, over time the work of many of these smiths is being taken much more seriously. As time passes collectors are now beginning to understand that some of these smiths were doing exceptional work and some are beginning to command vastly higher prices.
This is a very good sword by a good smith. It is well preserved, in great shape, in decent polish, and ready to be appreciated as is or mounted up as a training blade.
